Emma was born on the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia from Dutch / Anglo-NZ stock. Being raised in a tropical area she was taught water-wise habits as a baby with her first formal swim lessons starting at 18 months of age. Childhood swim time fun in a home pool served to develop her water confidence and skills. Pool races with neighbourhood friends became increacingly competitve and progressed to junior school swim carnivals where Emma first experienced the awe of standing on the top step of the 'Winners Podium' at age 8.
